PRIMARY FUNCTION/GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The primary responsibility of this position is to lead the activities of area technical personnel and perform a variety of technical procedures to apply prescribed ionizing radiation for radiological diagnosis.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Completion of a 24 month approved radiographic technology program or    equivalent.

 2. Registered with the American Registry of Radiographic Technologist (ARRT).

3. Have 40 CEU’s specific to mammography (or equivalent), and maintain 5    specific to mammography annually.

 4. Meet ACR certification criteria.

 5. Minimum of one year experience as a mammographer.

 6. Minimum of one year experience as a radiologic technologist.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. On a daily basis, leads and directs the operation of the Women’s Imaging or Screening Center, which includes technologists, schedulers, darkroom assistants and other personnel assigned to the area:

a. Communicates problems and recommendations regarding area to supervisor;

b. Organizes work flow;

c. Assures all mammogram exams are coordinated with prior mammograms and  prepared for radiologist reading in a timely and  accurate manner; and

d. Gives input on performance evaluations.

2. Assigned to be a Quality Control Technologist for the Equipment and Processor, reporting any malfunction and equipment problems to the supervisor of the Center

3. Performs the following duties related to mammography and radiology, which includes but is not limited to:

a. Coordinates mammography procedures;

b. Performs Quality Control tasks related to mammography;

c. Trains and orients other technologist--directs, supervises and evaluates the activities of student radiographers as assigned to training;

d. Provides Self-Breast Exam education to the patient; and

e. Performs minor surgical techniques in assistance to the radiologist, using sterile  technique.

4. Positions and handles patients with a high degree of safety and professionalism:

a. Provides protection in accordance with prescribed safety standards;

b. Sets up and adjusts radiation protective shielding required for maximum protection in accordance with appropriate report of the National Council on Radiation Protection relating to medical use of ionizing radiation and  appropriate state laws;                    

c. Determines and selects proper electronic and technical factors which safeguard the patient, x-ray tube and equipment; and

d. Maintains an awareness of the patient’s physical and emotional condition, recognizing and reporting any adverse reactions.

5. Controls a variety of complex equipment to apply ionizing radiation for radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures, and may control ultrasound and stereo biopsy equipment as well:

a.  Operates all equipment with a high degree of proficiency, which includes but is  not limited to radiographic and fluoroscopy units and accessories, portable equipment and ultrasound equipment;

b. Reports immediately any malfunction, necessary adjustments or repairs of    equipment to the supervisor; and

c. Performs Quality Control monitoring of equipment as assigned in accordance with ACR/MQSA.

6. Follows established film processing procedures and techniques:

 a. Performs Quality Control monitoring of processor unit as assigned in accordance with ACR/MQSA and

 b. Reports immediately any malfunction, necessary adjustments or repairs of   equipment to supervisor.

7.  Directs and practices sterile technique to prevent cross-contamination of disease

8. Interviews patients and performs record keeping functions to include, but not be  limited to:

a. Assures accurate information on patient films following the ACT/MQ guidelines where applicable;

b. Assures accurate information on patient file folders;

c. Assures accurate and complete information on patient history sheets;

d. Completes Quality Assurance tasks as requested;

e. Informs patients of negative exam results as requested by the radiologists;

f.  Completes patient consent forms for interventional exams as required; and

g.  Hangs patient mammograms on the viewer assuring all required documentation  has been obtained in a accurate and timely manner.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills

necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possess the ability  to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate

information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's departmental policies and procedures.
