I.         PRIMARY FUNCTION/GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

           The primary responsibility of this position is to perform patient care duties involved in a variety of technical procedures and to apply ionizing radiation for a radiological diagnosis as well as performing imaging procedures in multiple imaging modalities to include CT, X-rays, Mammograms, and Ultrasound..

II.        EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

           1.        Must have completed a 24 month approved radiologic technology program or equivalent. Registered with the American Registry of Radiographic Technologist (ARRT) or eligible

           2.        Basic computer knowledge. Current Special Procedures, Ultrasound, Mammography, or CT experience required..

III.       ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

_____1.        Positions and handles patients with a high degree of safety and professionalism.

_____2.        Controls a variety of complex equipment to apply ionizing radiation for radiographic, fluoroscopic, Ultrasound or Mammograms examinations.

_____3.        Sets up and adjusts supportive and immobilization equipment and devices as required by individual cases.

_____4.        Provides protection in accordance with prescribed safety standards; sets up and adjusts radiation protective shielding and special screening required for maximum protection in accordance with appropriate report of National Council on Radiation Protection, relating to medical uses of ionizing radiation and appropriate state laws.

_____5.        Determines and selects proper electronic and technical factors, which safeguard the patient, x-ray tube and equipment.

_____6.        Follows established film processing procedures and techniques.

_____7.        Directs and practices sterile technique to prevent cross-contamination of disease.

_____8.        Operates all equipment with a high degree of proficiency, which includes but is not limited to:

Radiographic, fluoroscopy, U/S, or Mammogram units and accessories. Portable equipment and accessories. Processing equipment and accessories. All patient related items.

_____9.        Reports immediately any malfunction, necessary adjustments or repairs of equipment to supervisor.

_____10.      Directs, supervises and evaluates the activities of student radiographers as assigned for training.

_____11.      Maintains an awareness of patient's physical and emotional condition recognizing and reporting adverse reactions.

_____12.      Performs record keeping and related functions that include, but are not limited to:

Assures accurate information on patient films. Assures accurate information on patient file folder.

_____13.      Maintains organized work atmosphere.

_____14.      Completes assigned tasks in a time frame appropriate for the situation; demonstrates flexibility to adjust to fluctuation in workload.

_____15.      Safeguards private medical information in the record; does not discuss medical information contained in the record with unauthorized personnel.

_____16.      Performs all related criteria of position skills assessment.

_____17.      Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his or her unit. Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.

IV.      OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

Transports patients, as necessary. Acquires patient film files, as needed. Performs dark room duties, as required. Uses CRT to acquire patient information. Performs first aid, as necessary. Acts as liaison between radiologist and patient. Performs QC procedures as required. Performs other tasks as assigned by department director.

V.       WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works in an area where there is Potential radiation exposure, which is monitored by radiation badges. Work requires the ability to access various areas of the department and hospital as necessary. Incumbent must have the ability to position oneself appropriately in order to care for patients and perform technical responsibilities.  Work requires the ability to transfer and transport patients in wheelchairs and stretchers. Requires viewing a CRT. Requires the use of heavy equipment. The individual performing this job may reasonably anticipate coming into contact with human blood and other potentially infectious materials.  Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
