Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Security Shift Supervisor is responsible for the security and safety for all persons in and around the campus to which assigned during the hours of their work shifts.  The Security Shift Supervisor service as a first lint supervisor directly responsible to the Security Lead/ Site Supervisor for all safety and security activities upon their assigned shift.  The Security Shift Supervisor is responsible for providing assistance, guidance, training, supervision, direction, and leadership to all Security Officers assigned to their shift.  The Security Shift Supervisor ensures all Security protocols and policies are followed, responds to emergency situations at all times, and initiates and/or approves all security or safety investigations from violations to hospital policies brought to his/her attention.

Essential Job Functions

Responsible for Security Officer staffing for their assigned shift.  Schedules Security Officer coverage for shift assigned. 

Organizes training under supervision by the Security Lead/Site Supervisor for assigned Security Officers on their shift.  Conducts and mentors Security competencies and orientations for Security Officers on their shift.  Participates and coordinates with other departments in preparedness drills, exercises, and/or training.  Functions as the source of Security expertise for non-security personnel at during shift assigned regarding security and safety topics, training, and guidance.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to ensure that the appropriate Security and safety practices are followed for all age groups; including neonates, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics, served within the healthcare site/ campus and shift assigned.

Supervises Security Staff to ensure all regulatory requirements, codes, and laws regarding safety and security are followed upon the shift assigned.  Works with Security Lead/ Site Supervisor on the St. Francis Health System Security Management Plan and supporting policies and procedures.

Performs external and internal building checks, maintains interim life safety measures, maintains surveillance for criminal behavior/ activity, assist stranded motorists and others with minor vehicle problems, maintains the doors access control system and video surveillance system, and aids in visitor control.

Assists medical staff in patient management as appropriate to include restraining within policy, serves as first responder to chemical spills and/or falls or accidents, and instills confidence in the safety and security of the site/ campus by presence and response towards incidents and concerns presented by patient, visitors, and hospital staff.

Responds to calls for assistance and protects staff and all others from injury due to conflict or confrontation. Takes control of dangerous situations by using sound judgement and quick thinking. Assist with landing and takeoff of Air Ambulance Services as appropriate during shift.

Conducts preliminary investigations in hospital related incidents and works closely with local law enforcement agencies when the need arises, Maintains accurate records of daily activities. Reports all unusual incidents and criminal activity on incident reports. Takes reports of vehicular accidents, missing property, and suspicious persons on hospital property.

Maintains the facility's lost and found during shift. May have to secure valuable property to ensure that it is not lost, tampered with, or stolen during shift. May be required to transport money to and from designated bank. Morgue pickups and release to Funeral Homes and Coroner during shift.

Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, trainings, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends in field of Security Management.  Stays current in Security Management healthcare industry standards.

Employment Qualifications

Required Minimum Education: High School diploma up to Associates degree                    Specialty/Major: Business, Liberal Arts or Sciences, or Emergency Management

Preferred Education:   Bachelor’s degree (or enrolled is a program pursuing a Bachelor’s)

Specialty/Major: Disaster and Emergency Preparedness

Licensure/Certification Required: Certified Security Officer thru South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED)

Licensure/Certification Preferred: Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) or higher from the International Association of Emergency Management or equivalent

Minimum Years and Type of Experience: 1-2 years Security Supervisors within hospital organization; also acceptable are internships and fellowships within government and volunteer agencies and organizations involved in security or emergency response and preparedness

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Critical thinking under pressure, communications with Senior Leaders, Law Enforcement, and Associates at all levels, team facilitation and/or leadership, teaching abilities, organizing and writing, and the capability to interpret complex federal and state regulations for response teams during a disaster

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: All the required skills in addition to clinical education and/or experience within emergency response.

The individual performing this job may reasonably anticipate encountering human blood and other potentially infectious materials.  Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.

The individual performing this job will encounter individuals in various emotional and/or mental states due to a variety of reasons and will be exposed to violence or the potential encounters with violent persons.  Individuals in this position are required to use the appropriate de-escalation and protection techniques, skills, and tools to defend themselves and protect others from harm.  During any encounter involving resistance to instructions or violence from another person, individuals in this position shall follow the BSMH Response to Resistance policy.

The individual performing this job may reasonably anticipate working within an office environment, walking and standing while on duty and patrol, working in a patient care area, and working in the outdoors when performing duties and when training and thereby exposed to weather, dust, noise, and the like.  The work may involve working within areas where there is a potential radiation exposure but is monitored by radiation dosimeters and/or radiation badges.

Equipment Used

The individual performing this job will need the ability to use and understand computer network and communications equipment both mobile and stationary, radio devices, copying and database equipment for office and command center work.

The individual performing this job will need the ability to use a baton for defense, cuffs for arrest, protective vest, body cameras, and any other security tools and/or devices approved for use within the Greenville Market of the BSMH St. Francis Hospital System.  The individual will be trained in the use of all equipment before being permitted to carry or use the tools and/or device while working.

The individual performing this job will need the ability and knowledge to use the DECON equipment as part of the patient DECON process.
