Bon Secours is committed to building a world-class workforce where people are valued for their skills and talents and appreciated for their uniqueness. In fact, in many of our markets, the diversity of our leadership reflects the diversity of the surrounding community. And we continually look for ways to increase this diversity.

Bon Secours Health System's commitment to diversity and inclusion can be traced back to its 19th century origins, in France, when twelve women of faith became the Sisters of Bon Secours, dedicating themselves to caring for the sick and poor in their homes. The Sisters' holistic vision of a patient as body, mind and spirit and their extension of care to the patient's family were well ahead of the times. Their humanitarian service continues today not only in the United States, but also in Africa, France, England, Ireland and South America. Their religious journey brings much diversity and inclusion, which is the fabric of who we are as a health care system.

As you discover the authenticity and breadth of our Mission-driven organization, you will begin to understand that Diversity and Inclusion are not just the latest buzz words from the business world. They represent our willingness to recognize, understand, appreciate, and respect individuals regardless of their differences. Such respectful relationships lead to "inclusion" where productive interactions reinforce feelings of belonging and a sense of connection to our Mission, Values and Operating Principles. As a result, people feel important, valued and essential to the organization's success. Their productivity rises and with it morale, self-esteem and motivation. We often refer to this as a journey with milestones created along the way. At Bon Secours, we equally participate in this journey.

Communicating clear strategies and obtaining employee feedback are germane to our success. Our Strategic Quality Plan firmly states that we will "attract, retain and develop an exceptional workforce and build a culture of inclusiveness and integrity that values diversity." In addition, our Diversity and Inclusion Council, with representatives throughout the system, meets to develop and build on initiatives that reach every employee, physician, volunteer, patient and resident in the communities we serve. These initiatives touch many areas, from recruitment, to education and training, to vendor relationships.

How do we measure the success of our diversity and inclusion initiatives? In addition to employee engagement surveys, chief executives from each facility conduct "talent reviews" within their local systems. We know that these are milestones, however, and that the journey never ends. One thing is certain: Bon Secours Health System is a place where talents, gifts and differences are welcomed, valued and appreciated.
